I think access alone is not so helpful…
Access combined with instruction on how to do meaningful research, online safety, useful tools (such as Purdue Online Writing Lab, Microsoft Office Templates, etc.) …
The computer can be used to unleash a student’s creativity through learning how to make digital movies, animations, computer games (talk about motivation!), etc.
Instruction beyond just computer usage is also important. I taught a number of business and info. tech. courses at the secondary level…
The local community college allowed students to test out of Comp.Sci 101… I had all my students take the test – 70% passed. The problem I had with this? It was not computer science – it was how to use microsoft office tools – which is not computer science.
