For what print sizes is the Nikon D3x (24.5 mp) preferable to the Nikon D3s (12.1 mp)? — MORE BELOW –?
[Not interested in 35mm film, medium film or medium digital formats (or larger formats) at this time.]
If a Nikon-based photographer happens to own both the D3s and the D3x, has all of Nikon’s best-grade full-frame lenses, and is getting into making larger and larger prints (for mounting on a very large interiror wall and displaying), at what size of prints should he/she choose the D3x over the D3s?
This question is only about making very large prints from either the Nikon D3s or the Nikon D3x, not about any other features of these (very impressive) cameras.
BTW, what does the “s” in D3s stand for, and what does the “x” in “D3x stand for?

I would say that 20×30 in is the cutoff line. While prints larger can be done fine from a 6 mpx camera the quality issue will be noticeable very close up which presents a problem on convention posters and billboards that are seen at eye level close up. Also cropping a shot is much more useful with a D3x than a D3s. However the trade off is ISO quality and speed the ISO quality is much superior on the D3s in poor light conditions allowing shots that aren’t possible on other models…
However I’ve made successful 40×60 in prints off my D90 with no noticeable quality problem close up…
