Macro photography without a Flash?
Hey Everyone.
I’m wondering about the effectiveness of doing macro without a flash. Mainly what kind of shutterspeeds I’d need at various magnifications.
At 1:1 on a 90mm lens, what kind of shutterspeed do you think i’d need to maintain a non-blurry picture if it’s handheld? How about 2:1?
Additionally, how well would a a 430 EX be for macro if I were to get one?

Mick, I can set my shutterspeed however I want, regardless of available light. Setting a correct exposure is another matter.
It’s like the ‘Use at least the same shutterspeed as your focal length’ guideline, except I’m asking if there is anything like that for magnification too.

You do realise that shutter speed is a function of light-availability as much as anything else, don’t you? The light levels outside can be 100 or more times as high as those indoors. How can we answer you?
If you want to take good macro photos without a flash, then do what I did – buy a stupid-bright LED off-road mountain bike light (one that pumps ~1000 lumens) and use that instead. I have two such lights and use them at different intensities for modelling effects. They throw VERY little heat forward and are bright enough to eliminate a flash. The also allow me to set up the shot properly (focus etc) as they’re always illuminating my subject.They cost a fortune but I wouldn’t consider not having them nowadays.
The 430EX would be eminently suitable if used off camera.
