What type of digital camera would be good for a 9 yr old that likes to take pics of birds?
He’s just starting to take interest in photography and we don’t want to spend a bundle but want to get a camera that he would be able to take good photos of birds especially hawks and falcons.
Great answer right above me. I would just add that if he wants to shoot birds, he needs to have a camera with sufficient zoom. Best would be to get an SLR with a telephoto lens, but that will be way too expensive at this stage. So get something with at least 10x OPTICAL zoom. Don’t fall for any electronic zoom. 10x seems like a lot, but that is probably a minimum to get good pics of birds. Otherwise he wil capture a lot of sky with a bird as small as a speck and will get bored quickly. Good suggestions about manual controls. Tripod is not necessary…birds move so much, it is hard to shoot with a stationary camera. Do check out www.dpreview.com and have fun!
