Starter Microscope is better for the job you want to do with looking at things in water, but you must have microscope slides and cover the drop of water you wish to examine with a cover plate or another slide so that the water is flattened out. This is important with high magnification like 150 and 450 times because the focal distance is very short at these high magnifications. Also you may wish to know that to see many bacteria you will need to stain the sample with a suitable stain. I don’t know if these would be included with the microscope of which you speak. The 50 times magnifier is better for looking at things like splinters or detailed plant structures or anything on the macro scale, like minerals, fracture surfaces etc. With any microscope patience and a good light source are most important to get a good look at something.
