USB microscope not showing plant cells?
I recently bought a USB microscope (Veho make) and it says that it can zoom in up to 400x. When I am looking at, for instance a leaf under the microscope, I am not able to see any cells. I am wondering if I am using the microscope properly, and if I am not could you please tell me what I am doing wrong. I am just looking through it and adjusting the zoom but it is not zooming in any where near 400x. The microscope is a Veho VMS 004. Thanks very much for any answers!
Thanks so much, that’s a great help. I’ve just seen the onion cells under the microscope by doing what you said. Are the cells transparent and like little blocks next to eachother?
My guess is that there’s nothing wrong with the microscope and that in fact you haven’t prepared your specimen properly.
You can’t just put a leaf under a microscope and expect to see cells because a leaf is too thick – it has many layers of cells which causes two problems:-
(a) the different cells piled on top of each (when seen from above) other won’t give you a clear view; and
(b) the leaf is likely to be so thick that it doesn’t let enough light through for you to see anything.
Test the microscope by looking at something you *know* will work – a human hair, for example. If you can see the hair then the microscope is OK and what you need is thinner (or more transparent) leaf sections.
Suggestions:
- Take an onion and peel back one of the layers and peel off a thin strip of the onion – this is thin enough to see cells. You can stain them with iodine if you have any – if you haven’t, get a red onion which works without staining.
- Take a thick green leaf and try to peel off one layer of the leaf (this works better with some leaves than others – so experiment to find those that give best results)
- If you want to examine the external structure of a leaf (the stomata on the underside, for example) paint the underside of the leaf with transparent nail varnish. When it’s dried, peel it off and put that under the microscope – it will carry the imprint of the detailed structure of the leaf.
EDIT: “Are the cells transparent and like little blocks next to eachother?” YES – that’s it… you’ve got them! You should be able to see a darker nucleus as well if you vary the focus a little.
