What is the difference between all of the cards and gadgets on the market today???

1. secure digital (SD) card
–basic small memory storage card.
2. platinum 40X or 60X SD
–same as 1, only faster.
3. professional 133X SD
–same as 1 or 2, but faster still (the 133x refers to how much faster than original SD)
4. professional 133X SDHC
–same as 3, but has more storage capacity (secure digital high capacity = SDHC)
5. XD picture card M-type
–different type of small storage card, developed by Olympus and Fujifilm. M cards hold more than the original xD cards, but are also slower.
6. Memery Stick Pro Duo
–a totally different format used by Sony cameras/devices.
7. UDMA 300X Compact Flash Drive
–CompactFlash is one of the original memory cards, used in the high-end digital SLRs. UDMA = Ultra dynamic memory access, essentially a high speed transfer mode that bypasses the CPU. 300x is very fast transfer speed.
8. High performance USB 2.0 Flash Drive
–flash drives are usually just USB memory that can be used like little portable hard drives or (if you remember) floppy disks. They plug right into the USB port. Unlike hard drives, they are solid state (no moving parts), using flash memory (hence, “flash” drive) that retain contents when removed from power. USB comes in several speeds. USB 1.1 is slow, USB 2.0 full speed is the same speed as USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 High Speed is the fastest version of USB. You want a USB 2.0 High Speed device connection if you can get it.
9. Jump Drive
–another term for a flash drive. You might also hear “thumb drive” used too.
10. mercury USB 2.0 Portable Storage Drive
–same as 8 or 9, just that it has a little indicator to show how “full” the drive is.
11. 5-in-1 or 12-in1 reader
–a device to read all the different memory formats, from secure digital to compact flash to memory stick to xD to formats you’ve never heard of. See the box to determine if your format is covered by the reader. Plugs right into the USB 2.0 port of your computer. I myself prefer the Sandisk Extreme USB 2.0 reader for my compact flash cards–very fast.
