PC connected magnification device?
I saw in Hammeacher Schlemmer catalog, there is available a 200x USB microscope wand, (cat.# GF-78340),
Question: is there a PC connected device that can display magnified newspaper print on the display monitor? My eyesight is fading, I think such device will be very useful. I know there are dedicated unit that can display the newspaper print, such as videoeye, but that is quite expensive and need separate space for it.
200X is way to strong a magnification, you probably want something in the 5X to 20X range.
There are similar USB magnifiers for low vision applications. The cheapest are shaped like over sized computer mice. There are similar devices that plug into the A/V jacks of a TV, in case you have an old flat panel analog TV you want to utilize. More expensive ones mount the camera & lens over a sliding tray.
Even the mouse type cameras look a bit overpriced to me. A while ago I was playing around with a couple of cheap web cams to see if they would do the same job. Both could be focused down to a few inches and could be used for the same thing. I used VLC media player (free) to display the image on the screen.
If you can find someone to do some do-it-yourself work, a $12 web cam might be good enough for you. The $12 one I tried (no name from China) had 6 white LEDs built into it which come in handy if you put some sort of diffuser over them. Note the “Focus Range: 3cm to infinity” in the discription.
If you have an old web cam or video camea that will not focus close enough, you can put a cheap magnifying lens in front of it to allow it to focus closer.
