What power microscope do I need to identify giardia?
I want to compare levels of harmful bacteria in water samples, what power microscope do I really need in order to identify some of the larger bugs? I am specifically interested in giardia, but would like to see other things as well. I have been looking at a 60$ 400X usb scope for it’s portability.
1 – Would a 400X scope be capable of identifying giardia, on stained slides, with a good backlight?
2 – What of interest could I see, in rivers and creeks, with 400X, on stained slides, with a good backlight?
Well since it is a bacteria you might want a little higher magnification to see it, but its probably possible to see it in little detail. Staining the slides would definitely help if you know how to do it, which if you’re asking about it, you must know how too 
Things of interest you could find in rivers and creeks are endless man, mostly you probably won’t see many pathogens that you will be able to identify, but the protists will be everywhere. Things like Volvox, Euglena, Paramecium, and all of the others probably. My favorite is Daphnia, or the water flea.
Good luck man! I also have my own microscope but its size doesnt allow for transportation very easily.
If you know how to Gram stain that will help to seek out pathogens also. Most gram negatives are pathogenic to some degree.
